There are a number of national professional organizations that
grant formal accreditation to appraisers who have provided
satisfactory evidence of their qualifications. Many of such
organizations are concerned with the appraisal of real property.
These organizations include the American Institute of Real
Estate Appraisers, the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, and
the American Society of Appraisers.
The American Society of Appraisers is a multi-discipline
organization whose membership includes appraisers from various
specialized fields of appraising. Members of the American
Society of Appraisers apply for accreditation in their
individual fields of specialization and those who meet the
applicable requirements are allowed to use the “A.S.A.”
professional designation.
Because of differences in appraisal procedures and techniques,
as well as differences in characteristics of the property
itself, an appraiser who is qualified to appraise one type of
property, such as real property for example, is not necessarily
qualified to appraise property of other types.
In the field of business valuation, there are several national
organizations that grant professional accreditation as a result
of satisfactory proof of competence which includes educational
requirements, testing, and peer review of valuation reports. The
major organizations are the Institute of Business Appraisers,
Inc., the American Society of Appraisers, and the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
